Feeding Dogs in the Cold Weather Months
As we enter the cold-weather season, we need to be thinking about how we feed dogs based on how they react to the cold. Some dogs do not like cold weather, so they spend less time outside or going for walks. Sometimes it is we as owners that do not like to bundle up and provide less exercise for our dogs in the winter. In these cases, as exercise is decreased, so is the need for calories. If you noticed that your dog is starting to put on some weight, then slightly decrease the amount of food provided at each meal.
On the other end of the spectrum, some dogs like the cold weather and spend a lot of time outside in low temperatures. Cold weather increases our dog’s calorie needs due to the energy needed to maintain their body temperature. In these cases, we may see our dogs lose some weight and will need to slightly increase the amount of food at each meal. In either case, it is important to make small gradual changes to the feeding amounts and watch your dog’s body condition to maintain a healthy body weight.
